Canada Cartel is a photojournalism‑led Canadian media organization. We publish to ABSOLUTE (the Canada Cartel magazine) and other Canada Cartel channels. These terms explain how you grant us permission to publish content and how we use it.

A) Definitions

  • “Content”: text, photos, images, video, audio, captions, metadata, data, graphics, and any accompanying releases or documents.

  • “You/Contributor”: the person or entity submitting or licensing Content to Canada Cartel.

  • “Publish/Publication”: editorial use on Canada Cartel websites, apps, social channels, newsletters, live events/screens, and print materials.

B) Ownership & credit

  • You retain copyright in your Content unless a separate written agreement assigns it.

  • We will credit in customary newsroom form (e.g., Photo: First Last / Canada Cartel; Words: First Last for Canada Cartel). If no credit preference is provided, we use standard crediting.

C) Licence you grant to Canada Cartel

By submitting or licensing Content to us, you grant Canada Cartel a non‑exclusive, worldwide, royalty‑free licence to use, reproduce, edit for length/clarity, format, host, store, publish, distribute, publicly display and perform, translate, excerpt, and create non‑misleading adaptations for accessibility or platform needs in connection with Canada Cartel’s editorial and promotional activities for our journalism.

  • Moral rights consent: You consent to customary newsroom edits (e.g., cropping, global toning, re‑sequencing, headline/dek edits, caption edits, accessibility transcripts) that do not distort meaning or misrepresent the scene.

  • No deceptive alteration: We do not add or remove material elements in photojournalism. For illustrative composites or graphics, we label them clearly.

Exclusivity. Unless we agree in writing to a time‑limited exclusivity window, this licence is non‑exclusive and you may submit or republish elsewhere. If exclusivity is agreed, we will specify the duration (e.g., 7–30 days) in assignment notes.

Sublicensing. We may authorize our service providers to process, host, and distribute Content strictly to deliver our services (e.g., CDNs, email/social platforms). Any third‑party commercial relicensing (e.g., brand use) requires your separate written consent.

D) Releases & permissions

You are responsible for obtaining any necessary permissions for your Content, including:

  • Model/guardian releases when required (identifiable minors, private settings, sensitive contexts).

  • Property/location releases when required.

  • Third‑party rights (music, graphics, trademarks) where applicable.
Provide copies with your submission upon request. Our editors can supply simple templates.

E) Warranties & responsibilities

You warrant that:

  • You created the Content or have authority to license it to Canada Cartel.

  • The Content is accurate to the best of your knowledge and does not infringe rights (privacy, copyright, trademark) or contain unlawful material (defamation, hate).

  • Editorial images represent real scenes/events; captions are honest and complete to newsroom standards.

  • You will disclose material conflicts of interest.

F) Compensation & expenses

  • Voluntary submissions (e.g., CARTEL Freelancers) are unpaid unless a written assignment specifies compensation.

  • Expenses require written pre‑approval to be eligible for reimbursement and must be supported by receipts.

G) Takedowns, corrections, and updates

  • We may edit for length, clarity, style, and legal review.

  • If you request removal of your credited Content from our owned platforms, we will make reasonable efforts to remove future availability; prior print runs, social shares, syndication, and archives may persist.

  • Corrections or clarifications will be added where appropriate and timestamped.

H) Safety, dignity, and sensitive material

We follow newsroom safeguards for vulnerable individuals and sensitive scenes. We may decline or edit Content to protect dignity, safety, or legal compliance.

I) Indemnity & limitation

You agree to indemnify Canada Cartel against claims arising from your breach of these warranties or lack of required permissions. Our liability for editorial use of Content is limited to the amount, if any, paid for the specific assignment, except where not permitted by law.

J) Contact & process

K) Changes to these terms

We may update these terms to reflect operational or legal changes. The version date will be posted at the top of this page. Material changes will be highlighted.
